Syesha Mercado - American Idol 7 Top 24 Semifinalists

American Idol fans may long remember the name Syesha Mercado. This young singer is rumored to make the top 24 on season7 of American Idol. She formally tried out for "The One" on ABC, is the daughter of a motown back-up singer and majored in theater in college.

"I’d like to think Carrie Underwood looks like me."

We like the confidence - but we loved the voice and the fact that she’s moving on to Hollywood.

Asiah Epperson - American Idol 7 Top 24

Asiah Epperson belted out the Leann Rimes tune, “How Do I Live,” in honor of her father. In one of the more sincere, tragic back stories to ever accompany a contestant, Epperson’s dad passed away in a car accident mere days before she tried out.

As you can see below, though, Asiah’s voice carried her through to Hollywood. This was no pity vote. Once she exited with her golden ticket, Paula Abdul broke down in tears and had to leave briefly. Probably to mourn. Possibly to get more liquored up.

American Idol 7 Top 24 Contestants

American Idol 7’s Hollywood round eliminations were presumably filmed earlier this week, and now an insider has revealed a list of the show’s top 24 contestants.


On Tuesday, “about 16 of the talent-show contestants — no one from Fox television would say exactly how many — were filmed emerging from their cars and going up Pasadena City Hall’s steps,” the Pasadena Star News reports. “Ariel Penn, who heads the city’s film office, said she believed the Fox show might have used City Hall as a substitute for the Civic Auditorium. Normally, Penn said, the finalists audition in the auditorium’s Gold Room and are filmed going up the steps outside.”

The Civic Auditorium’s steps weren’t usable due to construction, and its general manager, Rick Barr, told the paper that the filming “is not an audition, it’s an elimination thing — they’re not singing and dancing. They find out whether they go on or not.”

Watch American Idol 7 Hollywood Round Live Online

All 164 talented contestants will endure a grueling rehearsal and audition schedule during the Hollywood round as they try to make the Top 24. The Hollywood round Part 1 will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8PM ET/PT and Part 2 shown on Wednesday, Feb. 13 where the top 24 Semifinalists will be announced.

Although viewers won't see it play out on television until Feb 12th & 13th, American Idol has allegedly selected its Top 24 seventh-season semifinalists. "The Top 24 were chosen today - and no, I have no updates at this time." -- Joesplace

"Joesplace'" claims appeared to be supported by a Pasadena Star-News report in which Rick Barr, the general manager of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, confirmed American Idol filmed at the auditorium on Tuesday.

"Fox officials don't want people around here," Barr told the Star-News. "This is not an audition, it's an elimination thing - they're not singing and dancing. They find out whether they go on or not."

The show was also seen filming about sixteen American Idol 7 contestants arriving in and emerging from Ford vehicles on the steps of Pasadena City Hall early Tuesday morning.

"I can confirm that we are shooting today, but details are confidential," - Fox publicist Jill Hudson

"Two people working on the film crew" reportedly said that they were "filming a commercial," however additional details were not made available, including the exact number of contestants present for the shoot. As one of the show's three major sponsors, Idol contestants regularly appear in Ford commercials throughout each season's broadcast run.

Idol has filmed segments for previous Idol installments on the steps of Pasadena Civic Auditorium and in the building's Gold Room, Ariel Penn, Pasadena's head of the city's film office, told the Star-News.

However the auditorium's steps are currently closed for construction, which Penn cited as a potential explanation for why the City Hall filming may have occurred.

Idol's seventh-season is currently entrenched in its audition-episode broadcasts, which will end with the show's February 6 broadcast. The initial portion of the Hollywood Round -- where 160 hopefuls get narrowed to the season's 24 semifinalists -- filmed in late November. Check out American Idol 7 Full Schedule.

American Idol Season 7 Omaha Auditions

Chris Bernheisel, 24, Fremont, NE - "Since You Been Gone," Kelly Clarkson
So the plan for Omaha was to start the show with an idiot, but an infectious and fun idiot. I have no idea what to think of Chris, but he clearly entertained the hell out of the judges. In his pre-audition interview he said "Today I'm so happy. I feel like I could explode and happiness is going to go flying everywhere...yeah." I think he did explode a little bit in the audition room.

He brought gifts for the judges, and Simon made it very clear that bribery is always a good thing (expect tons of gifts next season to be dumped on the judges). He even brought a photo album of himself with Kelly Clarkson to show what a humongous OH MY GOD THE BIGGEST American Idol fan he is. So much so that he got overwhelmed just talking about it and started crying. You see, he's wanted to try out for 7 years but never had the money to travel "so thank you so much for coming here." Wow, what a great set up. Now this guy's going to blow us all away, right? Of course not. He sucks ass.

The whole thing would have been completely forgettable except that right after he was rejected, he asked if he could audition to work the red carpet at the finale. And then began to announce as if he were there. Suddenly, I liked this guy. He's got chutzpah! Clearly amused, Simon told him to tell local affiliate FOX 42 that they wanted Chris covering the finale for FOX 42. Chris continued to be excited and bounce up and down and scream and sing Paula Abdul songs until he left the building. And amazingly, as soon as he got outside he started jumping up and down even more. Apparently we were getting the subdued "inside voice" Chris. Good lord, I bet he jumps on small children and knocks over old ladies all the time when he's outside.

Jason Rich, 21, Stout, IA - "When You Say Nothing at All," Keith Whitley
Jason had me worried for a minute there. It really looked like his nerves were going to get the best of him. After three tries he'd only managed to get through two lines of his song. "You've just blown that," Simon told him. And it was a damned shame. Not only does Jason have an awesome first name, but "dude can blow," to quote famed wordsmith Randy Jackson.

Simon gave him one last chance, and apparently the pressure was enough to open the floodgates. Suddenly Chris was belting out line after line. Randy didn't see any "star quality" in him but he has a nice tone to his voice. Everyone agreed to give him another chance and a ticket to Hollywood, but with a parting warning from Simon. He will never, ever, ever get another chance like that. "If that we're a live show," Simon explained, "We're off the air." And he's right.

Hey Paula! Look who finally decided to show up.

Rachel Wicker, 23, Richmond, MO - "Don't Tell Me to Stop Loving You," Lee Ann Womack
Rachel is a six-time arm wrestling champion, which means we got to see her arm wrestle everyone in the waiting room, including Ryan. Did you notice that Ryan had a little muscle there he was flexing? Aw, that's so cute, Ryan. Look at your adorable little bicep *mwah* *mwah* *mwah*.

She finally gets into the audition room and she's so country that Garth Brooks had to check to see if she stole his twang. It was decent enough, if a bit too stylized country for me. Simon's problem was "You're performing as if you've been doing this for 50 years, at the end of your career, as if it hasn't worked out." Randy asks one of the age old questions I've always wondered. What is with country singers and the half yodel sound they put in their voices (to convey emotion or something)? It's not natural. But despite her supertwang ("Able to crack up and down three octaves with every syllable! It's Supertwang!") Paula and Randy put her through.

American Idol Season 7 San Diego Auditions

Perrie Cataldo is a single father (the mom passed away suddenly two years ago) of an almost 4-year-old son. He sang "I’ll Make Love To You" and I liked him a lot. I could just tell from his speaking voice that he was going to be good. Simon said he has a "really, really good voice." Three "yes" votes and Perrie is through to the next round! His little boy joined him in the room - so cute!






Tetiana Ostapowych (24) San Diego is off to a hot start, with a bluesy rendition of “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Simon thinks she’s good but not great, and not nearly has good has she thinks she is. Sounds familiar, eh’ Simon.
